Auto Transport Tips
Before choosing an auto transport company, determine the best time for the company to pick up your vehicle and the best time for them to drop it off at your new home. Most auto transport companies will require several days to a few weeks to deliver your vehicle. We suggest you make arrangements for alternate transportation while your vehicle is delivered.
When speaking to the transport company’s representatives, ask about their insurance coverage. Most companies do not cover any goods left in the car and will not assume responsibility for damage caused by loose items in the car. Remove any valuable or fragile items and, if you prefer to leave some items in the car, make sure they are securely packed in the trunk.
The following checklist will help you to cover all the major issues before transporting your car:
• Take out any Loose CDs, coins, pens or any sharp object that can cause damage to the vehicle or your upholstery.
• Make sure a company representative performs an inspection before your car is loaded onto the trailer. Keep a copy of that inspection for your records. Do not sign before you have had a chance to review the inspection to your satisfaction.
• Make sure to remove any food or laundry from your car, as these items can lead to unpleasant odor after a long journey with the windows closed. Also, make sure you empty the ashtray and seal the windows before shipping your car.
• Do not store any liquid of any kind, regardless of how it’s packed as it may stain your car.
• Do not leave any weapons in your vehicle. If a weapon is stolen from your car while en route, you may be held legally responsible.
• Record the mileage of your vehicle prior to pick-up and check it upon delivery.
• Notify your insurance company and find a new agent at your destination, to protect and cover your vehicle.
• Once your vehicle arrives at your new home, don’t forget to see your local RMV to register your car in the new state and get a new plate.
